As we head into the 4th of July, we want to take a moment—not just to wish you a good time with friends and family—but to reflect on what this holiday really means to us as a community, a culture, and a business built on excellence.
Independence Day celebrates freedom. But for many of us, it’s also a complicated reminder. When the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, our ancestors did not celebrate. That version of “freedom” didn’t include us. The real work—the fight for our liberation, identity, and recognition—came later, hence Juneteenth (June 19th, 1865). And in many ways, it’s still going.
At No Grease, we see ourselves as more than a barbershop. We are a cultural institution. A safe space. A place where stories are told, confidence is built, and men, women and children are shaped up—literally and figuratively.
This year, Kendrick Lamar’s track “Not Like Us” has sparked conversation everywhere. On the surface, it’s a lyrical shot—but if you listen closely, it’s deeper than rap. It’s a statement. A mantra. A reminder that our culture is different, our journey is different, and our excellence doesn’t need comparison. They not like us—and that’s a powerful truth.
This message brings to mind a quote from the legendary Samuel L. Jackson, who once said we were labeled “too reckless too ghetto.” That phrase wasn’t meant as a compliment—it was used to dismiss the way we dress, talk, move, and live. But here’s the thing: those same traits they criticize are what set trends around the world. What they call “reckless” is often fearless. What they call “ghetto” is usually authentic.
At No Grease!, we flip the narrative. We don’t run from our roots—we refine them. We elevate the barbershop experience not by changing who we are, but by standing in it with pride, style, and purpose. When you sit in one of our chairs, you’re not just getting a cut—you’re stepping into a legacy of resistance, self-love, and community.
So this 4th of July, while the country celebrates independence, we celebrate something even deeper: resilience. Unapologetic identity. The beauty of being “not like them.” And the freedom to define ourselves—on our terms.
Enjoy the holiday. Celebrate safely. And remember: don’t chase trends—set them. Always.
No Grease! More than a cut. A culture.
